"My father died of a heart attack at 44 after basically smoking and drinking himself to death," she said. "My mother, who is 92, is basically the head complainer at her retirement home in New Jersey, which is pretty much the place where the word 'complain' was invented. So when people ask how I can be so positive about aging, I tell them I've had great role models to work against. I'm trying hard to teach my mom how to smile."
Hanson says her own healing has been accelerated by a decision to write letters to her grandchildren on all topics of life, and save them in a book that she hopes will someday find its way to the kids.
Part of Hanson's seminars involves breaking into small groups to brainstorm about the worst fears people have about aging, and how to conquer those fears.
"I was dancing last Sunday over at Blues In The Park, and a 28 year old woman I know walked up and said, 'All of you seniors are having such a great time! You give me something to look forward to,'" she recounted. "It was great to hear that we can be an inspiration to the 20 somethings out there."
afraid of Alzheimer's disease and of becoming dependent on others," she said. "We write down those fears, crumple them into paper airplanes and let go of them. I tell people to find a way to laugh at their problems, or find something good about them. I'm losing my hearing, but my spin is that maybe we're actually meant to look people in the eye and sit closer when we talk."
"In my 40s, I became a sort of metaphysical thinker. I investigated new thought churches," she said. "I sort of embraced the idea that if you change your thinking, you'll change your life, and I decided I would try to transcend my own fears of aging with a positive twist: humor."

"We're maidens before puberty. When we're procreative to menopause, that's the motherhood creative space. The senior phase is crone," said Hanson, a columnist for "Crone Magazine."
